Dear neighbor, 

Happy June! I hope that this month is off to a great start for you. I welcome you to join me to celebrate and honor a few different initiatives which are all central to who we are here in the 16th district.

 

This past weekend we observed Memorial Day and I hope that you were able to take time for reflection and to honor our fallen service members. Thank you to all of the students and teachers who joined me in writing and making cards for Baychester Academy - P.S 169 and NY Institute for Special Education. Your kind gestures were well received by all at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. 

This month we are also honoring a few different initiatives all listed below. 

  • Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

    • According to the CDC, about 6 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer's disease. To raise awareness for Alzheimer’s, join me in wearing purple throughout this month, and visit alz.org to learn more about the condition and how it affects the body. 

  • LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

    • Happy Pride! This month, we join everyone in our district and throughout the nation to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and rededicate ourselves to the fight for equality. To kick off the month, join me for a community conversation today at 6:30 p.m.  where I meet with leaders throughout the district to discuss advancing LGBTQA rights.

  • National Gun Violence Awareness Month 

    • Over the past year, the entire state of New York has seen an uptick in gun violence. As of April, there was a 54% increase in gun violence compared to April of last year. Join the New Yorkers Against Gun Violence tomorrow,  June 2nd, by wearing orange to show your support in ending gun violence. 

    • We need to address the epidemic of gun violence by implementing strong gun safety legislation, including mandatory background checks and a ban on assault weapons. We need to ensure that guns do not end up in the wrong hands from individuals traveling to and from New York and save lives. Earlier this year, I voted for and the House passed HR 8 - the Bipartisan Background Checks of 2021. 

In addition, you can join the following events this week. 

  • Red Cross Town Hall 

    • Join my office today at 5 p.m. for town hall with the Red Cross on Children's Emergency Preparedness. This event is perfect for youth in grades 3-5 to learn how to prepare for emergencies and to share what they learn with friends and family.

  • Bystander Intervention Training

    • As a community, we need to protect one another — and stand up for one another. That's the only way we can conquer hate and build a community that's safe for all. Join NYC Human Rights tonight for a bystander training to address discriminatory harassment at 7 p.m. tonight, June 1. RSVP here: riverdaley.org/bystander  

  • Foster Youth Community Conversation 

    • As of 2018, over 15,000 youth are in foster care throughout the state of New York. Many of these youth need more access and awareness about resources available to them while they are in foster care and once they become young adults. Join my office tomorrow, Wednesday June 2 at 4:30 p.m. for a community conversation on foster youth.
